TALLINN WELCOMES TWIN CITIES FOR STUDY VISIT
Last week, the City of Tallinn had the honour of hosting delegations from four municipalities topresent our experiences in sustainability governance and localisation of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on circular economy.
The study visit was organised as part of the sustainability governance framework, where Tallinn consults 4 partner municipalities on green infrastructure planning and circular economy while testing the sustainability governance model, which we are developing. The four partner cities are Vinnytsia (Ukraine), Kutaisi (Georgia), Narva (Estonia) and the municipality of Saaremaa (Estonia)..
On the first day of the visit, experts from Tallinn gave an overview about our experiences in sustainability governance, strategic planning and the localization of the SDGs as well as examples of citizen participation such as the Citizens’ Assembly and the participatory budget.
Experts from the consulting agency Civitta and Tallinn Circular Economy Department gave an overview about the legal aspects of circular economy in Europe and Estonia and Tallinn’s waste management and circular economy, with the emphasis on how Tallinn is creating the city’s Circular Economy Development Plan.
They also talked about Tallinn’s best practices of the circular economy, such as switching to separate collection of bio-waste, certification of biowaste compost, development of Tallinn waste centers into circular economy centers and banning of disposable dishes at public events.
On the second and third day of the study visit, there were excursions to the Tallinn Waste Recycling Center, Pääsküla waste station’s reuse room and repair workshop, to Tallinn’s first communal garden Pelguaed and Kopli93 makerspace.
As a next step we will draft work plans with the respective cities to support their efforts in circular economy through the lens of SDGs.
