From April, Tallinn waste stations are open every day

All four waste stations in Tallinn are open every day from the beginning of April to provide smoother service. The stations switch to summer operation on 1 April, which also means longer opening hours.

Tallinn’s four waste stations in Pääsküla, Rahumäe, Paljassaare and Pärnamäe will be open from 1 April from 12.00-20.00 on weekdays and from 10.00-18.00 on weekends. Waste haulage and internal cleaning work will be organised on a rolling basis, so as not to disrupt residents’ waste deliveries.

“I myself have queued up at the station during rush hour. It is great to see that the service is popular and necessary – residents care about the environment and take the opportunity to properly separate their waste. This is why we are extending the opening hours of the waste stations, so that people can make environmentally conscious choices as conveniently as possible.” said Deputy Mayor Joosep Vimm.

Previously, the stations were open six days a week. “We decided to make the change to better serve the citizens of Tallinn, because one day of not operating was causing confusion among residents,” said Kristjan Mark, Manager of Tallinn Waste Management Centre.

However, all waste stations in Tallinn are closed on public holidays, so all waste stations will be closed on 15 and 17 April for Easter. On Saturday 16 April, however, all waste stations in Tallinn will work according to the weekend schedule and will be open from 10.00-18.00.

The waste stations will also be closed on May Day, 1 May, on Victory Day and Midsummer’s Day on 23 and 24 June, and on Independence Restoration Day in Estonia, 20 August.

The Paljassaare waste station is located at Paljassaare põik 5 in the Põhja-Tallinn district, the Pärnamäe waste station at Ristaia tee 8/Pärnamäe tee 36 in the Pirita district, the Pääsküla waste station at Raba 40 in Nõmme and the Rahumäe waste station at Rahumäe tee 5a in Nõmme.

Tallinn residents can hand over a limited amount of biodegradable garden waste, which is generated during spring gardening, free of charge. A one-off delivery of six 100-litre bags, or 0.6 cubic metres, will be accepted. At the Pääsküla and Paljassaare waste stations, biodegradable garden waste, including tree and shrub leaves, must be emptied from plastic bags into the containers provided. At the Rahumäe and Pärnamäe stations, garden waste bags can be emptied on the ground into funnels.

At the waste stations, the city accepts free of charge unlimited quantities of waste paper and cardboard, packaging, cooking oil and grease, scrap metal, complete electrical and electronic equipment and usable furniture.

Up to the following quantities of waste can be handed over for free:

  • 0.6 cubic metres of household garden and landscaping waste
  • 0.6 cubic metres of usable clothing
  • 1 cubic metre of untreated wood
  • 1 cubic metre of marked plastic waste
  • 8 scrap tyres
  • 1 cubic metre of concrete
  • 1 cubic metre of pre-sorted bricks
  • 1 cubic metre of tiles and ceramic products
  • 1 cubic metre of flat glass
  • a certain quantity of miscellaneous hazardous waste

Other types of waste and waste exceeding the limit quantities can be accepted on the basis of the station’s price list. More information can be found on the waste stations’ website at jaatmejaam.ee. The stations are managed by the Tallinn Waste Management Centre.
