Ten times the usual amount of bulky waste brought to waste stations by Tallinn residents in free campaign week

Organised for the first time, the free bulky waste collection week resulted in ten times as much bulky waste collected at Tallinn’s waste collection stations than during the usual week in March. A total of 1 472 cubic metres of bulky waste was collected at the stations during the week, up from 125 cubic metres a week earlier.

“The amount of waste brought in shows that Tallinn residents were very interested in the first free collection campaign. This year, similar campaigns are planned on a quarterly basis,” said Joosep Vimm, Deputy Mayor of Tallinn. “Each of these initiatives help reduce the amount of waste discarded in nature, which is already very positive. Alongside this, we are gradually opening recycling rooms at waste collection centres, which will aim to recycle items that are fit for use or in need of repair that end up at the waste stations.”

In total, residents took 1,123 items of bulky waste to the waste collection points during the week, compared with 205 a week earlier. The Rahumäe waste centre received the highest number of drop-offs, but the Pääsküla waste centre received the highest volume of bulky waste. Examples of bulky waste items include furniture, mattresses, bicycles and strollers.

Bulky waste can also be collected as part of organised waste collection. You can order the transport of large quantities of waste through the waste collection company in your area and pay the charges set out in the price list. The waste carrier is obliged to take away the large waste within three days of the waste holder’s request. More information: /Korraldatud-jaatmevedu (in Estonian).

If you have obsolete furniture in good condition or appliances that still work, you can call for a Reuse Centre van free of charge by emailing kaubik@uuskasutus.ee.

Furniture that is fit for use can also be handed over free of charge to waste stations. Handing over broken furniture at the waste station is charged according to the price list. Waste stations are located in Pääsküla (Raba 40, closed on Thursdays), Rahumäe (Rahumäe tee 5a, closed on Fridays), Pärnamäe (Pärnamäe tee 36/Ristaia tee 8, closed on Fridays) and Paljassaare (Paljassaare põik 5, closed on Tuesdays). The stations are open on weekdays from 14-19 and on weekends from 10-15. For more information: https://jaatmejaam.ee/ (in Estonian).
