Valencia will be the green capital of Europe in 2024
The winner of the European Green Capital 2024 was announced last week in the current European Green Capital Grenoble. After Tallinn – the European Green Capital of 2023, Valencia will take the title.
Spain’s third largest city (approx. 800,000 inhabitants) Valencia caught the eye of the European Commission’s jury with a program that honors its green history and traditions, and promises to include all its strengths in steps towards a sustainable future. The Valencia Green Capital idea is based on four pillars: increasing green infrastructure and promoting urban vitality; climate and energy efficiency; sustainable mobility and restoration of public space and sustainable food in the Horta area surrounding the city.
In addition, the European Green Leaf title was awarded to small towns (up to 99,999 inhabitants), the cities of Velenje (Slovenia) and Helsingbor (Denmark).
The winner of the European Green Capital will receive a financial reward of 600,000 euros from the European Commission to implement its strategy and to involve and mobilize citizens and interest groups. Each green leaf laureate winner will be awarded a cash prize of 200,000 euros.
The award ceremony was preceded by a presentation summarizing the year of Grenoble’s green capital, and Tallinn presented the Tallinn biodiversity exhibition to the attendees, which we were able to see in Tammsaare Park in May.
