Bird nest box maintenance day in Kristiine
You are invited to take part in the bird’s nest box maintenance day organized as part of the biodiversity initiatives of the European Green Capital. It will take place on March 25 at 12 in Löwenruh Park.
It is necessary to empty nest boxes of old nest material every year to prevent the spread of parasites in the nest in the new year. Namely, a variety of remains can remain in the nest box, such as dead baby birds. All this promotes the spread of parasites. If it happens to be a cold winter, the nest box can be disinfected, but not completely.
When cleaning the nest box, all the old nest material must be pulled out of the box, collected and burned. Very thorough gardeners have sometimes gone over the inside of the nest box with a flame torch to burn off all the remains of the parasites, but generally emptying the nest also helps.
When examining nest boxes, one should also check whether the nest has been occupied at all. If this has not been done for two or three years in a row, you should think about relocating the nest box – the current location is probably not suitable for the birds. However, if one year of nesting is missed, there is no reason to worry – even natural nesting sites are not used every year in a row.

We hope that through this day of work, people will also be inspired to regularly maintain the nest boxes in their home gardens/yards!
