The Tallinn city government adopted the rules for organizing an environmentally friendly event

The Tallinn city government adopted the rules for organizing an environmentally friendly event. The guide contains requirements and recommendations for organizing environmentally friendly events, which are useful for leaders in various fields when making sustainable choices – organizers of cultural and sports events as well as conferences and tourism events.

According to the mayor of Tallinn, Mihhail Kõvarti, the guide for organizing environmentally friendly events provides an overview of the good practice of Tallinn events. “We want the events taking place in Tallinn to be nature-friendly, and for this, we prepared a guide that can be used by city residents and organizations operating in Tallinn to make their behaviour more sustainable,” explained Kõlvart.

“In the year of the European Green Capital, the city first wants to reduce the footprint of its organization,” said Pille Arjakas, coordinator of the Tallinn Strategic Management Office. She added that minimum requirements for events organized by city institutions have been prepared and established for this purpose, in order to express the example of the public sector in shaping a sustainable world and to reduce unnecessary garbage and wasteful use of resources. “Less is more – for the sake of the planet,” she concluded.

From now on, event organizers of city institutions are obliged to ensure separate collection of waste at events. Food and drinks are only allowed to be served in reusable containers, and the organizer must avoid wasting food. Decorations must be reusable or their materials can be recycled. When choosing the location of the event, it must be taken into account that it is easily accessible on foot, by bicycle and by public transport.

Tallinn has tested the guide at several events. In 2022, reuse and other environmentally friendly solutions were tested at various public events, and the first results showed that they are possible if there is good will.
