BALTIC SEA FAMILY DAY

Location: Seaplane Harbour outdoor area
Time: 13:00-17:00
Access to the marine research vessel Aranda is open from 13:00 to 18:00

From 13:00 to 18:00, all interested individuals have the opportunity to visit the Finnish research vessel Aranda.

Aranda is a research vessel equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for marine research. The ship is designed for year-round data and sample collection. Aranda’s main research area is the Baltic Sea, but it has also participated in expeditions from the Arctic to the Antarctic.

In order to increase public awareness of the marine environment, R/V Aranda also opens its doors to the public.

The visit to the Aranda marine research vessel is organized as part of the BALTICITIES project by the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE.

Activities in the tents from 13:00 to 17:00:

TalTech Marine Systems Institute – Introducing a new educational program for young scientists, studies at TalTech, discussing microplastics, cyanobacteria, and various marine research methods.

Waste Wolf – Environmental education program “Waste prevention and reduction, recycling and reuse, and promoting waste sorting habits.”

Environmental Board – The Environmental Board teaches environmentally friendly fishing on Baltic Sea Day – introducing the diversity of Estonian fish species and fishing rules.

Maritime Museum – In the hobby tent, children can engage in hands-on ship or raft building and learn more about and register for the Maritime Museum’s hobby club for elementary school students in the upcoming season.

Maritime Museum – In the maritime archaeologists’ tent, you can see underwater footage, talk to Estonian Maritime Museum’s maritime archaeologists, and learn about their research techniques. Additionally, you can visit the Maritime Museum’s research vessel Loodi, where you can explore authentic diving equipment.

Nature Museum – Pop-up exhibition on Baltic Sea species and environmental educational activities for children.

Entertainment: Throughout the event, the Green Capital mascot Kimmu will interact with children, and there will be a science theater performance by Ahhaa. The day concludes with a performance by the Silver Brass ensemble.
