Hydrogen bus to drive on line 16 in Tallinn

As part of a European Union project, a hydrogen bus will be driving in the European Green Capital Tallinn during the first week of October. Residents can learn more about the bus at the hydrogen conference on 2 October or ride the bus on line 16 from 3-5 October.

According to Ain Laidoja, the Managing Director of the Estonian Hydrogen Association, it is impossible to achieve climate goals without green hydrogen. “In the transport sector, hydrogen technology provides an alternative to battery technology and competes in the category of zero-emission vehicles,” said Laidoja. “Using electrical buses on public transport and intercity routes has its own advantages over battery- and hydrogen-powered buses. We will bring a hydrogen bus to Estonia for test drives to show our readiness to participate in the competition for the provision of clean and climate-friendly public transport on equal, technology-neutral terms.”

The Roundtable on Clean Vehicles conference will be held on Monday, 2 October at Kadaka tee 62A. At the conference, people can learn about the hydrogen bus and take part in a discussion on the challenges that the transport sector faces in reaching climate neutrality. The event will also showcase hydrogen technologies that will soon allow for a significant reduction of CO2 emissions both in Estonia and all over the world.

Tallinn City Transport Ltd will test out the hydrogen bus on line 16 from 3-5 October to see how the bus functions in our climate as well as to give Tallinn bus drivers the opportunity to drive a hydrogen bus.

Tallinn carries the title of the European Green Capital 2023 and one of the city’s focuses is the use of innovation and new technologies to reduce and adapt to climate change.

The hydrogen bus will arrive in Estonia as part of the JIVE2 project, the goal of which is to introduce the bus and its technology in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
