An attractive recreation area is being opened on the banks of the Pirita River
Tomorrow, on October 18th, an attractive modern recreation area with a fantastic environment is opened on the banks of the Pirita River. This area was created as part of the “Green Tracks” project and offers diverse leisure opportunities for residents. You can play games like pentanque, table tennis, chess, checkers, do yoga or other gymnastics sports. The area, completed in the Green Capital year, is accessible on foot, by bicycle, and even for those arriving in wheelchairs.
“When I see the banks of the Pirita River in the heart of Pirita and the area near the historical sailing complex today, I can say that the result meets the expectations. The representative plot of land in the most popular beach in the capital has been elevated to a new level. I am sure that this heavily-used pedestrian and cycling area, which has been eagerly awaiting renovations, will become a favorite for Pirita residents. Here you can enjoy concerts, sports competitions, presentations, or just the pleasant sea breeze, or bid farewell to sailboats sailing from the opposite shore. I would like to thank the architects who have created a cozy environment for meetings and having a conversation, offering hobby options suitable for all ages,” said Kaido Saarniit, the head of Pirita District, and added that the Jõesuu Park shows how the Green Capital year makes urban space better. Although the title year itself is coming to an end, the improved urban space and change in mindset remain, he added.
The plant life in the beach park consists of 26 different species suitable for maritime conditions. The diverse selection includes various types of grasses, wildflowers, sea pink, mugwort, wormwood, cocksfoot, and St. John’s wort.
Jõesuu 5 was designed by Annika Valkna from Arhitekta OÜ, the landscaping was designed by landscape architect Peep Moorast, and the construction work was carried out by Mefab OÜ.
The new recreational area is an important part of Tallinn’s vision as the European Green Capital, which focuses on making urban spaces greener and more human-friendly. During the project, several new elements were added to improve the functionality of the area. In addition to the updated spatial layout, a sheltered bicycle park, seating areas, and the proportion of tall vegetation were increased. This allows visitors to enjoy their time in a renewed and friendly environment, participate in sports, and spend time in nature.
Tallinn’s European Green Capital project “Green Tracks” includes various activities aimed at improving the quality of urban space and green areas, adding new greenery, and increasing spatial quality in densely used places. The project also supports the development of urban green networks and offers innovative urban spatial solutions. As part of the “Green Tracks,” activities like the summer park in Raekoja plats, 14 flower meadows, and ten food lots were created across the city. More information: greentallinn.eu/green-tracks.
