Tallinn invites you to participate in the garden design competition “City and nature hand in hand”

In the year of the European Green Capital, Tallinn wants to pay special attention to nature and especially in the urban space. In relation to environmental protection, the aspect of beauty is no longer the only important aspect in garden design, but also the increase of biodiversity and sustainability. Inspired by this, the garden design competition “City and nature hand in hand” will be held on Tornide Square from June 11 to September 16.

The purpose of the competition is to propose inspiring and creative solutions on how to integrate urban and landscape elements and how to create complete and beautifully designed garden areas that combine the urban environment and wild nature.

“Tallinn’s urban space is characterized by an abundance of parks and green areas. This is something we can be proud of because in many other European cities, this is not the case. The traditions of designing green areas show a strong connection with nature and help calm the other, industrial and much more peaceful side of Tallinn. By keeping garden art in honour, we emphasize the beautiful and natural side of Tallinn even more and can enrich it,” said Kätlin Viksne, the organizer of the competition and the project manager of Tallinn’s European Green Capital events.

Everyone who wants to enter the competition with an exciting time design idea can participate in the competition: schools across Estonia teach the relevant subject, entrepreneurs in the field, various associations/organizations and other legal entities.

“The garden design competition is a great opportunity to firstly show everyone your unique gardening talent and meet other creative gardening enthusiasts, and of course also a unique and valuable experience for a lifetime,” said the renowned garden designer Maria Palusalu, who herself has previously competed at the Tallinn Flower Festival held at the same place and this time contributes to the organizational side, also participating in the evaluation process.

The best garden master of the garden art competition and the people’s favourite, chosen by visitors of the gardens, will be announced at the festive closing of the competition on September 16, 2023.

Please notify us of your desire to participate no later than April 28 via e-mail at katlin.viksne@tallinnlv.ee.
