COMICS EXHIBITION “TO DO LIST FOR THE PLANET” OPENS AT THE NEW MARKET SQUARE
Today at 2:00 p.m., the exhibition “To-do list for the planet” will be opened on New Market square, which presents and illustrates global sustainable development goals with cartoons in simple and understandable language to ensure a better future by 2030.
The exhibition will be opened by Maris Rahnu, head of the Tallinn Strategy Center’s development planning office. “One of the goals of the exhibition is to raise people’s awareness of the goals of sustainable development, and we believe that this internationally popular cartoon series will help to do that,” said Rahnu. She added that everyone’s contribution is extremely important in order to achieve both Tallinn and global goals, and the exhibition helps to make sense of and see your role in it. “What is there to hide – the goals of sustainable development create a framework that will help us more vigorously implement the city’s development strategy “Tallinn 2035″ and thereby improve the lives of all of us,” she said.
The exhibition “Planet’s list of works” was designed and illustrated by the Dutch artist Margreet de Heer. The exhibition is on New Market square until January 23.
Global Goals for Cities
Tallinn leads the Global Goals for Cities, a network of 19 European cities aimed at sustainable urban development, whose purpose is to draw attention to global sustainable development goals. The sustainable development goals (SDG – Sustainable Development Goals) formulated by the UN action plan until 2030 are divided into three major areas: economic, social and environmental field. These include poverty eradication, gender equality, clean water, climate change prevention, sustainable cities and energy sustainability, among others. According to Rahnu, in order to fulfil one goal, attention must also be paid to others – 17 sustainable development goals and 169 sub-goals and the guidelines for their implementation are interconnected.
In addition to the 17 global SDGs, Estonia also monitors the goal of the vitality of the cultural space, which derives from Estonia’s national strategy for sustainable development “Sustainable Estonia 21”. The Global Goals apply to all countries and their implementation requires contributions from both the public and private sectors.
The purpose of the Global Goals for Cities network is to develop and support the capacity of European cities to implement the goals of sustainable development (according to the UN Agenda 2030). 19 cities from 19 European countries are participating in the project, which will start to make the 2030 Agenda a reality before 2030. As part of the project, a guideline for the use of the global sustainable development goals framework in the city will be developed, which will help to implement the Tallinn 2035 city development strategy adopted at the end of 2020 and also contribute to the global goals.
The vision and strategic goals of the development strategy are based on the SDGs, the European Union’s Green Deal, other international agreements and the goals of the Estonian state, including the “Estonia 2035” strategy, which is a national development document for the implementation of sustainable development goals.
