European Green Capital 2023: Environmental Film Programme
The climate is warming. The environment is changing. PÖFF is highlighting it.
The title of the European Green Capital is not the end goal for Tallinn but an opportunity to contribute even more to building a sustainable green world city. For us, a green capital means that Tallinn is a resilient and inclusive city where people and the city work together to create a better urban space and support an environmentally friendly and sustainable way of life. Therefore, we wish to bring a programme of environmental films to this year’s PÖFF to raise people’s awareness of environmental issues.
Programme:
-
5th of November, at 7:00 PM, Environmental Film Programme’s Opening Screening: ‘I am the Earth’ & ‘Greener Tallinn’
- “Plastic Fantastic”– “Plastic Fantastic” follows several protagonists, on the one hand representatives of the plastics industry and on the other scientists and activists, to find out where the plastics crisis is leading us.
- “Mighty Afrin: In the Time of Floods” – The mighty Brahmaputra River is rising again, ready to swallow everything in its path. On a disappearing mud island, 12-year-old orphan Afrin prepares to leave the only world she has ever known. When the floodwaters submerge her home, she refuses to surrender to its deadly tides.
- “I am the Earth. Stories from the End of the World” – Over 46 minutes, the film takes the viewer on a journey to discover different initiatives and cases where Chileans are contributing to mitigate the effects of climate change, from large-scale projects and scientific innovations to day-to-day citizen actions, all of which are collectively necessary.
- “Songs of Earth” – The director left her family home thirty years ago. Today, she returns to the mountainous region of Western Norway with a camera, walking in the footsteps of her parents and ancestors in order to answer the question: where do I come from?
- “Earth Protectors” -As a leading environmental artist, Anne de Carbuccia has for the last decade artistically portrayed and documented human-caused threats to the planet, including drought, plastic oceans, species extinction and endangered cultures.
- “Greener Tallinn” – Through four seasons, the diverse natural landscapes and environments of the Estonian capital reveal themselves layer by layer. This is a tribute to Estonian nature that is right here, in the city around us.
- “Between the Rains”– Documenting the Turkana-Ngaremara community as they contend with prolonged drought, this visually stunning coming-of-age story follows a young, orphaned man’s journey to adapt to radically changing climate conditions in Northern Kenya.
