GLACIER SAILS IN PALM HOUSE SKY
Algae from the Arctic Ocean are printed on sails hoisted above palm trees and araucaria.
The work is built on contrast – arctic plants versus tropical plants, ocean plants versus land plants, a top-down view that must be viewed from the bottom up – to point to the essential kinship of all life forms.
Peeter Laurits: „I spent the summer solstice of 2022 at the Slettnes lighthouse by the Arctic Ocean, the northernmost tip of Europe. I participated in Academy for Rhythmorphology (ARm) # 1 workshop at the invitation of Hilde Meth, Signe Lidén and Arjen Mulder. The purpose of the workshop was to focus on the rhythmic movements of nature, especially the rhythm of the tides, and to get acquainted with the ocean life at the peak of the polar day. 12 artists from different countries and disciplines took part in the workshop, with whom we made underwater sound recordings, filmed, photographed, screened plankton, took measurements and held seminars with them during the week.“
