Find green labeled food on the menus of the Tallinn Restaurant Week!

As part of the Tallinn Restaurant Week starting today, 17 Tallinn restaurants offer food with the green label. Developed by the European Green Capital 2023 Tallinn initiative, the green label marks environmentally friendly restaurant food, and its purpose is to draw more and more attention to the importance of environmentally friendly decisions in food culture.

“Last year we developed criteria for environmentally sustainable food for restaurant food, this year we are happy to see green labels already in 17 restaurants. The selection offered by restaurants plays an important role in shaping the habits of visitors, and we see that more and more restaurants want to be the leaders of an environmentally friendly food culture,” said Joosep Vimm, Deputy Mayor of Tallinn. He added that Tallinn will continue to encourage restaurants to adopt the criteria in the year of the green capital and hopes that people will increasingly value the environmentally friendly food offered to them.

The green label is given to restaurant food that meets at least one criterion: vegan food, organic food, local grass-fed or wild animal meat, and local fish of natural origin.

The environmental criteria for restaurant food have been developed by the Tallinna Strategy Center together with Civitta on the initiative of Tallinn, the European Green Capital 2023. The following restaurants have joined this restaurant week: Barbarea, FARM, Fotografiska, Guru, Kolm Sibulat, Lee, Lendav Maaler, MOON, Oasis Restaurant, Ocean 11, Orangerie, Paju Villa, Peet Ruut, Rudolf, Salt, Smak and ÜLO.

Environmental criteria for restaurant food:

VEGAN FOOD

Vegan food does not contain animal ingredients, i.e. meat, eggs, dairy products, or other animal products such as gelatin and honey.

ORGANIC FOOD

Organic or ecological food means products that are produced and prepared according to the requirements of organic farming.

LOCAL GRASS-FED OR WILD ANIMAL MEAT

Grass-fed lamb and beef are environmentally friendly, because the animals are mostly grazed on permanent grasslands, and this management method preserves the biodiversity of these grasslands. Wild animal meat is a more environmentally friendly option because the animal grows only using natural resources

LOCAL SUSTAINABLE FISH

Fish species of natural origin are fish caught from local water bodies (the Baltic Sea or Estonian inland waters).
