Reuse rooms and repair shops
Tallinn has taken a clear direction to promote the circular economy in the city of Tallinn. In 2022, we received support from the Center for Environmental Investments, within the framework of which, among other things, by 2024, it is planned to launch a repair shop-learning center with different orientations (textiles, wood, furniture, etc.) in four locations.
A repair workshop has already been opened in the Kopli 93 community center, where life is lively. Every Wednesday, the doors of the workshop are open, both new and familiar repair enthusiasts work at the desks, and the number of fixed items and happy owners keeps growing!
The aim of the future project is to promote the repair of broken items and the re-use of usable items. As a result residents have different opportunities in the urban space to recycle their valuables and repair broken items instead of throwing them away. In the course of these activities, contributions are made to changing the habits and way of thinking of the inhabitants, reducing overconsumption, increasing the number of recycling facilities, and thereby also reducing the environmental burden.
The creation of reuse rooms and repair workshops enlivens local community life and gives residents the opportunity to develop and practice the circular economy themselves.
In the course of the project, a reuse room (for free giving/taking of items) and a reuse center will be created at the Pääsküla waste station (Raba 40) and a repair workshop, where all the main repair tools for repairing various items (e.g. bicycles, buggies, toys, chairs, tables) are represented.
A wood repair workshop will be created next to the Paljassaare waste station (Paljassaare põik 5), where old wooden furniture, windows, doors and other wooden parts belonging to buildings can be repaired. In addition, also make new items.
A sewing workshop will be created next to the store of MTÜ Uuskasutuskeskus Sõpruse 255, so that it will be possible to give a new face to clothing items that need repair.
In the course of the project, a reuse room (for free giving/taking of things), a sewing workshop (textile repair) and a furniture repair workshop (furniture repair, restoration) will be created in the Lilleküla ring economy center (Mustjõe 40).
An activity supervisor is hired for all the repair workshops that are created, whose tasks include managing the workshop, supervising the residents and conducting training.
The directions of action of the circular economy of the city of Tallinn are, among other things, the creation of a reuse and repair society. change the emphasis from conventional waste stations to a circular house with a waste station, i.e. a circular economy center with a single name. The plan is to create a network of circular economy centers based on existing waste stations and new circular economy centers to be created.
In the roundhouses created next to the waste stations, the main focus is on reuse rooms and repair workshops. The reuse room is the re-use of usable items. The purpose of organizing repair workshops is to provide an opportunity to repair and restore things that lead to the waste station, in each roundhouse the focus is on repairing certain types of things, e.g. furniture, old windows and doors, clothes, bicycles, technology, etc.
The city creates opportunities for residents and communities in the form of repair shops and wants to find and manage non-profit organizations, companies and craftsmen engaged in the repair of various things.
