On International Water Day, the state of the capital’s water bodies and the challenges caused by climate change were discussed

Yesterday was the UN International Water Day, based on which the online seminar “Tallinn, the green capital of Europe – from a water perspective” was held. The seminar exchanged best practices and experiences and discussed how to deal with the challenges of climate change in urban space.

At the International Water Day seminar, Tallinn was able to present all the activities and innovative ideas that helped Tallinn become the green capital of Europe in 2023.

“Yesterday’s seminar created a platform between Estonian and especially Tallinn water specialists, researchers training the next generation of water experts and the private sector currently working in Tallinn,” said Krista Kampus, head of the European Green Capital Bureau. She added that the platform brought together water specialists from all over Estonia, which made it possible to exchange best practices and experiences.

The seminar talked about the state of Tallinn’s water bodies (rivers, streams, lakes), the challenges associated with climate change – flooding caused by heavy rainfall, and how to adapt to climate change by creating rainwater solutions close to nature in the urban space (e.g. rain beds, water-permeable curbs, etc.).

The purpose of International Water Day is to raise awareness and celebrate the availability of clean water. In 2015, the world committed to achieving the clean water goal for sustainable development – the promise that everyone will have access to water and sanitation by 2030.

Estonian tap water is high-quality drinking water, in addition, there are several public drinking water taps in the city, the locations of which can be found HERE.
