Since in 2023, Tallinn will proudly hold the title of the green capital of Europe, the theme of the 2022/2023 academic year is nature and environmental protection, and within this framework exciting events, environmental programs and competitions will be held for both school and kindergarten children.

The green capital has four focus themes: sustainable city, inclusive city, smart city and learning city. The environmental theme year in Tallinn’s educational institutions is a very important part of the learning city program, because the younger we acquire good habits, the longer they will accompany us on our way of life. Children can also influence their parents and grandparents to produce more sustainably.

Tallinn – the European Green Capital 2023 organizes several different environmental competitions for the children and young people of Tallinn during the school year. We want to give all children and young people the opportunity to have a say and make the voice of young people sound.

The winner of the “Bio-rich City” speech contest will be able to deliver their speech at the opening event of the Green Capital in January 2023, as well as the children’s drawing competition to find the mascot of the year of the Green Capital.

In the new year, the year of Tallinn’s European Green Capital, there is also a competition and a video competition for planning a nature and child-friendly city in Minecraft.

In addition, kindergartens and schools pay attention to the topic of waste reduction.

In the years 2022-2024, the educational program “Prevention and reduction of waste generation, reuse and recycling, and formation of the habit of collecting waste by type” will run, during which children will color environmental pictures and solve environmental tasks and puzzles.
