Unique Taskumets in Tallinn’s city center

Taskumets is an innovative initiative developed by FUTU architects in partnership with Tallinn as part of the Tallinn – European Green Capital 2023 program. Its primary purpose is to increase public awareness regarding environmental sustainability. Rather than using square meters as a measurement, the project employs a parking lot size, which is a relatable, easily replicable, and scalable unit. Within these units, various surfaces are depicted, showcasing diverse plant species, an abundance of pollinators, and restored soil. The overarching objective is to create a thriving and enriched ecosystem.

Taskumets aims to rewild the city of Tallinn, drawing inspiration from the concept of rewilding initially used in wildlife conservation. It involves the restoration of land to its wild, uncultivated state, encompassing the reintroduction of native plants and animal species. The goal is to bring many different types of plants and animals into the city, so people can connect with nature and help bring back a variety of living things. In the long run, this initiative benefits not only the environment but also the people residing in the capital, moreover healthy urban mini forests can help cities adapt to the impacts of climate change.

To accomplish our goals, Taskumets assembles a team of passionate professionals from various fields, including rewilding architects, environmental engineers, landscape architects, artists, art teachers, and designers. Together, we engage in building, planting, educating, and organizing maintenance efforts. Closely collaborating with Tallinn, we identify urban areas in need of rejuvenation, selecting native species of trees and shrubs unique to each project location. By creating the perfect wild forest for each space, Taskumets provides a transformative experience, allowing individuals to transform outdated green spaces into tranquil forest havens designed to support native biodiversity and counteract air pollution.

Creating the first garden gave us many wonderful moments. During the building we heard many times “Jőudu!’. Engaging in dialogue with the local community has been an integral part of our process, and the positive feedback received has encouraged us to envision new potential projects on the horizon. We are committed to continuing our efforts, expanding the footprint of lush nature in Tallinn, and looking forward to collaborating with the city to achieve these objectives.
