European Green Capital’s Green Compass has arrived

During the European Green Capital year, Tallinn has created an interactive online platform called “Rohekompass” (Green Compass) at www.rohekompass.ee, where people can assess their environmental behavior and make commitments to adopt more eco-friendly habits.

With Rohekompass, anyone can map their green behavior in four different categories: energy, transport, home garden, and consumption. “The goal of Rohekompass is to make people think about the impact of their daily habits and how they can make more environmentally conscious choices. It shows what each person can do to be a responsible consumer and environmentally friendly individual,” said Krista Kampus, Head of Tallinn – European Green Capital 2023.

For each category, there are also commitments and activities that Tallinn is undertaking. “It was essential for us that when we encourage people to make changes or do things differently, we also want to demonstrate how Tallinn is contributing in these categories and what Tallinn is doing differently,” Kampus emphasized.

She added that Rohekompass is a project that Tallinn will hand down and make available to future European Green Capitals, such as Valencia in 2024.

How does Rohekompass work? After providing basic information, users can choose their preferred subject. Questions related to each subject will appear, and participants can answer honestly – there are no right or wrong answers. If a statement is valid, users need to move a slider on the timeline and select the year when they started engaging in that green behavior. Each eco-friendly action has a specific value, and the longer a user has been practicing that eco-behavior, the larger their “green reward tree” will grow in the eco-behavior picture.

After mapping their activities, Rohekompass provides users with a picture of their eco-behavior and suggestions on how they can live more sustainably. Each person can then make suitable green promises and even send them to their email. Users can also learn about Tallinn’s efforts in the specific category during the European Green Capital year and in the near future.

Rohekompass was created in collaboration with Rohetiiger’s lifestyletest.eu sustainable lifestyle guide.
